There is no denying the fact that; dance is an integral part of the Nigerian culture and indeed its popularity has continued to soar in recent times. An attestation to this is the different dance competitions that are increasingly springing up in the country. The latest entrant is tagged BOTY, an acronym for ‘Battle of the Year’, an annual break dance competition that takes place in almost every part of the world.

The annual international break dancing series Battle of the Year (BOTY) began in Hannover, Germany. Its uniqueness is the battle (competitive head to head dance) between break dance crews as opposed to individual break dance battles.

Regional qualifying tournaments, also known as preliminaries, are held worldwide culminating the world final event, which is usually held in Germany. As the biggest in its genre, the event is attended annually by over 8000 visitors across the world.

Battle of the Year is a hip –hop culture event putting the main emphasis in the aspect of break dancing. The other elements; Djaying, Grafitti art and Emceeing are integrated into the side program.

Every year the Battle of the Year features the best and most innovative break dance crews from all over the world creating an environment for friendship, international exchange of culture and knowledge. It is a platform for hip-hop culture in general and an opportunity for all participants to express themselves in a peaceful and non-racist environment.

The competition will start in Jos on Tuesday June 6 at Crest Hotel & Garden, Benin on Tuesday June 13 at Excalibur Hotel and Lagos on Monday June 18 at Eko FM Multi-Purpose Hall. The finals will take place in Lagos on Friday July 5 at the Indoor Sports Hall of University of Lagos. The winner will represent Nigeria at the Africa Regional Finals in Cape Town, South-Africa.
