The Headies 2015: Drama, Profanity & More At Fore During Music Awards
The much anticipated 2015 edition of the highly coveted the Headies awards have come and gone but the drama that overshadowed happenings at the event will go down into the history books as one of the most controversial in Nigerian Music history.
In an event filled occasion, the 2015 edition of the awards held at the Landmark Events Center, Oniru, Lagos on Friday, January 1, 2015. It was dominated by a dramatic war of words between two of Nigeria’s finest music exports, Olamide Adedeji and popular hitmaker, Don Jazzy.
Popular indigenous rapper, Olamide was the cynosure of all eyes during the awards after he stood up for his artiste, Lil Kesh. In what looked like a scene from a scripted movie, Olamide and his crew stormed the Headies stage after YBNL act, Adekunle Gold was announced winner of the ‘Best Alternative Song of the Year’ award.
While Adekunle Gold gave his acceptance speech, thanking God, and dedicated his award to his YBNL label and Lil Kesh, Olamide took the microphone off him, flipped the script, and went off in a profanity filled rant. He didn’t exit the stage until he smashed his drink cup on stage and also threw his cap into the cheering crowd.
Events took another turn when Don Jazzy was ushered on stage to pick his ‘Special Recognition’ award for his contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s music industry. Don Jazzy dropped a bombshell hinting at a lengthy beef between the two music superpowers saying “Egbon Olamide, if you want the car come and collect it. God bless you”.
The pair – Olamide and Don Jazzy – have since tendered a public apology to fans and followers of Nigerian music for their conduct during the awards. The award organizers also released an official statement where happenings at the event were properly addressed.
